Are you ready for the 57th FilmFare Awards 2012!!

Oh yes, the biggest and arguably the best Award Show that Indian Cinema has ever witnessed….Till date. And it is all set to knock on your Television sets soon. The Filmfare Awards are presented annually by The Times Group and is one of the oldest and most prominent film events given for Hindi films in India.

The honour is been given to both artistic and technical excellence of professionals in the Hindi language film industry of India. The Filmfare Awards have been often referred to as Hindi film industry’s equivalent to the Oscars. (Well it’s a debatable topic, let’s not get into it) ;)  I know you must be eagerly waiting to find out the nominations for this year’s FilmFare Awards, but before that let me take this opportunity to share some interesting facts about these awards.

Did you know:

- Dilip Kumar, Shahrukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan have won 8 awards each till date(Best Actor + Best Supporting Actor)

- Surprisingly, the biggest blockbuster hit in the history of Bollywood – Sholay, won only one Filmfare Award in 1975 and that too for Best Editing.

- ‘Do Bigha Zameen’ was the first movie to win ‘Filmfare Award For Best Film’.

- In the 25th year of Filmfare Award ceremony, the statue was made of silver, while in the 50th year of its celebration, gold status were given.

- Filmfare Award was initially named ‘Clare Awards’, after the ‘Times of India’ film critic – Clare Mendonca.

- In 1969, Sunil Dutt organized a party for Dilip Kumar, when the latter beat him for ‘Filmfare Best Actor Award’. This started the trend of post-award parties in Bollywood.

- In 2006, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie ‘Black’ won 11 Filmfare awards, the most awards won by a movie in the history of Filmfare Awards, till date.

Words will not be enough to write about Javed Akthar

The moment we hear “Javer Akthar”, all we say is WOW, what an amazing talent, what command over words. We are all too small to praise and write about him, but taking this chance to dedicate this post to Javed Saab. What better occasion to choose writing about him than on his 67th Birthday. Not many would know that his original name was Jadoo, taken from a line in a poem written by his father: “Lamba, lamba kisi jadoo ka fasana hoga”. But soon he was given an official name of Javed since it was the closest to the word jadoo.

Did you know, in his early years living in Mumbai, he managed to write the dialogue for a minor film for Rs. 100. Soon he joined with his friend Salim Khan to develop the story for Adhikar. And the world knows them as Salim-Javed. Both of them had a wonderful run in the film Industry with super-hit movies like Andaz, Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay and Don. You will not be surprised to know that Javed Saab has won the National Award five times and won the Filmfare Award fourteen times, seven times for Best Script writing and seven times for Best Lyrics.

No doubt that he is a true gem to this Film Industry, and will always be one of the strongest pillar to this Industry. He is not just a poet, lyricist and scriptwriter, but a true gentleman, and a man of his words. iDubba and team takes this opportunity to wish him Happy Birthday .

Which is your Favourite Bollywood Dialogue….?

I am sure that it would be very difficult for you to single out your favourite movie dialogue…. Don’t worry, I am also sailing in the same boat as you. There have been endless movies been made, and there are some amazing dialogues that have left a strong footprint in our minds. Not necessary that we were born in that era, but there are still some lines that are alive in our hearts forever. Following is an attempt to relive those celebrated dialogues that the movie industry has gifted us. Are you still thinking about your favourite Movie Dialogue… Let me try to help you out…. Hope you might find a few of those in the list below….

Sholay …. Well you might wonder that this is not a Dialogue… well, to be honest, every scene, every moment of this movie is a masterpiece… Everyone, almost everyone knows the famous dialogues from this movie…

” Kitne aadmi the” Just 3 words, but still the way Mr Amjad Khan has said it on the silver screen, it’s just awesome.  “Jo dar gaya woh mar gaya”Well, this is one such dialogue that we end up using in our personal lives too…. Have you ever used this….!!!!  “Arrey oh sambha kitney admi they” ?”  ”Sardar… maine aapkaa namak khaayaa hai sardaar…”   ”Arre O Saambha… kitna inaam rakkhe hai sarkaar ham par” How about this…. “Yu ke ye kaun bola?”   And the very famous scene on the Water Tank “  Arre gaanw-waalo sunaa tumne bhaaeyo, mausi bhi taiyaar hai basanti bhi taiyaar hai isliye marna cancel” The list is endless, and one can just go on and on…. It would not be fair to rate these timeless classics… Each dialogue is a gem and can’t be compared.

Let’s come to some more of such classics that might take you back to your favourite lines…… Who can forget the intense scene between Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan… Just one word said it all - Babu Moshai…The moment we hear this, there are Goosebumps, and we can visualize the death scene of Anand. And also the way he kept on saying, ” Zindagi aur mauth upar vale ke haath hain jahapana use naatho aap badal sakthe na mein hum sab tho rang manch ke katputhliyaan hain jinki dor upar vale ki ungli pe bandhi hain kab kaun kaisa uthega yeh koi nahin batha saktha hain !! “ 

Time to move on to another such intense dialogue; again just 4 words made it such a huge hit…. “Mere paas Maa hai”, followed by “Khush to bahut hoge aaj tum” and “Jao pehle us aadmi ka sign lekar aao jisne……..” again it’s not possible to pen all of them down, as each one is just amazing. What about Amar Prem and its unforgetable dialouge -  ” Arri oh Pushpa, Arrey i hate tears re” Also there are some dialogues that are still used in today’s times, no prices for guessing -  ” Don ko pakad pana mushkil hi nahin namumkin hai”

Let me try to just put across some more dialogues, which might confuse you while deciding your favourite Dialogue… Well, just kidding, just trying to take you back in time which these dialogues… “Mooche ho to Nathulal jaise ho….warna na ho” ” Mogambo khush hua”  ” I can talk englis, i can walk englis because english is a very phunny language”  ”I love you kkkkkkk…………….kiran”  ”Rishtey amin to hum tumhare baap lagte hain magar naam hai shenshah”  ” Tarkih par tarikh” “Hum jaha pe khade ho jaate hein, line wahi se shuru hoti hai”  And these two are my all time favorites “ Tumhe charo taraf se gher liya gaya hai apne aap ko kanoon ke hawale kar do.”  and  ”Kanoon ke haath bahut lambe hote hain”

Is the comparison of 3 IDIOTS with SHOLEY correct?

Now a days, at every channel, there is a GA-GA about the movie 3 IDIOTS(2009). They are comparing its popularity and comparing its Box-Office collection with the blockbuster SHOLEY (1975), which does not make any sense. This actually raises a question on the IQ of the people working on this news. They are comparing the collection on SHOLEY (300 CR In 1975) with the current collection of 3 IDIOTS (150 CR till now in 2010).

I just have couple of questions for these people:

  • Does the number of viewers are the same?
  • How many people could reach to the theatre to watch the movie now and that time?
  • Appreciation of money during the period?

Just to share the information in the year 1975 when there are very few cinema halls were present across the country and number of viewers was very less, and that time SHOLEY has done tremendously well.

For an example, just ask any of the person across the country, “Do you know GABBAR SINGH?” and the answer will be definitely “Yes” in 95% of the cases and the percentage will raise as the age group will increase. I just want to share a moment that happened in my life. I was working in an IT company and one day I just said to my colleague that he is looking like VIRU (Dharmendra of SHOLEY) today as he was wearing the same king of the denim jacket that VIRU wore in SHOLEY. He asked me, “Who is VIRU?”

“Haven’t you watched the SHOLEY?” I asked with surprise.

“No” he replied.

“What, you haven’t watched SHOLEY?” this was the question asked by approximately 20 people sitting around him instantly with a big surprise on their faces and this news spread in the entire company with in a hour and everyone who knows or do not know him asked him the same question “How come you haven’t watched SHOLEY?”

Now consider the same situation for the 3 IDIOTS. Does this movie could even come close to the height of the popularity that SHOLEY touched? Does any character of 3 IDIOTS could get the popularity as of GABBAR SINGH of SHOLEY?

Now come about the collection of this movie. In 1975 the movie had done the business of Rs 300 CR.

If we consider the gold rate appreciation to normalize the currency value with time, Gold rate in 1975 was Rs 540 per 10 gm while it is Rs 17000 in 2010, which is approximately 31.5 times of the past rate. So after normalizing the collection of SHOLEY according to 2010, the figure comes around Rs 9540 CR.

Now compare the collection of 3 IDIOTS with SHOLEY and think, Does Rs 150 CR is anyway near to the Rs 9540 CR?

Seriously, the current media looking really uneducated when it comes to comparison and they just sell the information without thinking does this make any sense or not. I know there are many factors that could be considered when making the comparison but the question still stands tall, that even after considering all the factors about both movies, Does 3 IDIOTS still anywhere close to the popularity and collection done by SHOLEY? Spreading this message by media that 3 IDIOTS could break or come closer to the records and popularity of SHOLEY is senseless.
