Amitabh Bachchan’s tweet confirms Kaun Banega Crorepati (new season) to air by August

The television audience is fortunate to hear the following words again “Lock Kiya Jaye”  “Sure, Confident” “computerji”. Yes you guessed it right, Big B is back and this time all set to Host the 6th Season of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC). There were reports that he might not host the sixth edition of the reality game show, but thanks to Twitter, Mr Bachchan tweeted “Off for a meet with Sony for next KBC…planning, operation, execution….will keep you informed on its (KBC’s) broadcast and other details”.

As you all know Mr Bachchan is super active on Twitter and always manages to keep his fans posted about news and his views on various topics. No matter what Mr Bachchan does it’s a news and this time he managed to relive the KBC Moments via Twitter. Following are some of his tweets related to this news.

“KBC: 22 million people tuned in to the opening episode .. Continued to be watched by over 120 million through the 56 episodes!! KBC: 16.5 crores prize money won, at an average of 12.5 lakhs per contestant on HOT SEAT… and.. 7.4 crore entries for GBJJ ..!!

“GBJJ: Ghar Baithe Jeeto Jackpot! Phone in on show, get right answer to a question, can win 1 – 2 – 3 lakhs at times!!”

These stats does show what a mass hysteria was created by this show. The show was first aired in 2000,  and was hosted by Big B. This was his first appearance on small screen. And soon the show became a huge hit as Big B hosted first and second seasons.  And guess what, following this, Shah Rukh Khan was soon seen in as the host for the third season. But thanks to the low TRP’s Big B soon returned to anchor the fourth season of the show. But this time it was was aired on Sony Entertainment Television. He did not stop there, and was also seen in the 5th Season.

Following is the illustrious list of the winners till the 5th season:

- Harshvardhan Nawathe – 1st winner of KBC in 2000

Well you might want to know when Big B will start the show… So here you go ;)

Do send in your views about the show and your favourite moments related to the show.

Bollywoord Stars and Television – iDubba tries to find out the real winners

It’s a unique relationship, sometimes Sweet and then sour ;) Don’t worry we are not talking about any link-up between actors. This relationship is about Bollywood Stars and Television. You might agree that Bollywood stars have given a helping hand to the TV industry in widening its horizons. But at the end of the day Television has been a major platform that the Bollywood Stars are using, some are successful while some have failed at the Box… oops… TV Office ;) Television was considered as an second innings for the actors and was considered to be the home for retired actors only. But times have changed. Many of the super hit, upcoming actors and actresses have joined that bandwagon and have taken up television shows.

iDubba is on a journey to find out the stars that have been successful / not so successful on television :

- Television will be incomplete if we don’t talk about Amitabh Bachchan :) He made his debut on television in 2000 with Kaun Banega Crorepati. Since then, every show he has graced has turned out to be a super hit. Those shows include Kaun Banega Crorepati, Kaun Banega Crorepati Dvitiya, Bigg Boss Season 3, KBC season 4 and 5

- Talking about KBC, who can forget Shah Rukh Khan :) But he had made his TV Debut way long back in 1988 with “Fauji“. He went on to appear in other television serial, such as Aziz Mirza’s Circus in 1989, which depicted the life of circus performers. And then there was no looking back, the television star was a movie star. But his real calling in television came when Amitabh Bachchan stepped down from KBC in 2007 and SRK took over. The initial TRPs of SRK’s KBC were promising but interest slowly started dipping. Then came the show Kya Aap Paanchvi Paas Se Tez Hain? Well again, initial TRPs of the show were promising but the show and it never managed to go past its first season. King Khan did manage to return to hosting a reality TV with Zor Ka Jhatka but did not impress much

- Done with one Khan… Now lets get back to Mr Dabangg :) Salman Khan did make his TV debut in 2008 with Dus Ka Dum. As they say if Salman is hosting a reality TV show, it’s bound to garner high TRPs. And this was true for both the shows – Dus Ka Dum and Bigg Boss Season 4

- Now its time to focus our attention on the Dancing King of Bollywood :) Yes you guessed it right – Hrithik Roshan. He made his TV debut with Just Dance in 2011. Soon after this was announced, there were reports in the media about Hrithik signing on for a sum of Rs 2 crore per episode. Since then, the show’s opened to moderate success.

- Time for some action :) Yes we have Mr Khiladi next in line. Yes Akshay Kumar did make his TV Debut 2008 with Khatron Ke Khiladi. He went on to host the 2nd season of Khatron Ke Khiladi too. Reportedly, the TRPs of both seasons were fantastic. However he was absent in the 3rd season as Priyanka Chopra was the new host. But soon the TRP’s were not in favor of Miss Chopra and hence Akshay had to return in the 4th Season of Khatron Ke Khiladi. Well he did not stop there and was soon present in every household ie Kitchen :) Yes he hosted the first Masterchef of India, a show based on cooking. His Master Chef India show did receive moderate success

- And finally this post cannot be complete without talking about Mr Perfectionist :) Mr Aamir Khan. He is all set to make his Television Debut with the show “Satyamev JayateThe Truth Alone Prevails“. The talk show will tell stories of real people across India” You can read more about his show over here  – Will “Satyamev Jayate” bring about change in the Indian Television scenario?

If you note carefully, there would be around 10 or 12 well-known actors doing shows on TV in one year. And most Bollywood actors come as either anchors or judges. So there is a good presence of our Bollywood stars on Television. Do let us know which is your favorite star that you would like to see on Television. and also it would be interesting to know if you think that this is a healthy trend.

Happy Viewing :)

What makes a reality show work?

With so many “Reality” shows in today’s time (both nationally & abroad) it’s very important to understand why and how a reality show clicks. There have been so many mega-successful shows in US/UK and their counterparts in India (and so many flops) that it is necessary to learn what works and what doesn’t. In this post we try to analyze deeply as to what are the different elements of a reality show and what should be taken care of while creating a new reality show.

Almost all of the reality shows in India or elsewhere are localized versions of already popular US or UK shows. Here are some of the shows which have worked (in India) and some which haven’t. We’ll then analyze all the aspects to understand what it takes to make a successful Reality Show:

  • Mega-successful shows-
    • Kaun Banega Crorepati (Who wants to be a millionaire)
    • Indian Idol (American Idol)
    • Dance India Dance (So you think you can dance)
    • Bigg Boss (Big Brother)
  • Successful Shows-
    • Fear Factor India (Fear Factor)
    • Jhalak Dikhla ja (Dancing with the stars)
    • Sa Re Ga Ma Pa
    • Boogie Woogie
    • Masterchef India (Masterchef US/Australia)
  • Flops-
    • Zor Ka Jhatka (Wipeout)
    • India’s Minute to Win it (Minute to Win it)
    • Survivor India

Contestants: No doubt contestants are single biggest asset of a reality show. Wrong selection of contestants can make or break the entire show. Contestants can be broadly categorized as- “Common man” and “Celebrities”. Depending upon the format of show creative team may decide to have common man or celebrities or a mix of both as contestants. For pure talent based shows like KBC, Dance India Dance, Indian Idol etc it’s  imperative to have common people as main contestants otherwise it looks too dramatic and unreal (remember how we feel when a celebrity wins 50 lacs in a KBC episode?). Celebrities as contestants work very well for reality shows in which drama quotient needs to be high. Questions have been raised about such reality shows being truly “real” but now audience have kind of understood that reality shows involve either good “editing” or good “drama” to look exciting on TV. Some such shows are Bigg Boss, Survivor India, Zor Ka Jhatka. Example of shows having combination of both “common man” and “celebrities” as contestants include Fear Factor (India) and Jhalak Dikhlaja.

Drama: Television is all about drama and not having any drama in a reality show is a sure shot way to kill it. An emotional story can become an important part of show’s success. KBC is known for creating dramatic situations based on a contestant’s profile or based on the question “What would you do if you win a Crore?“. Shows like Bigg Boss rely too much on drama which is demanded by its format. “Zor Ka Jhatka” couldn’t impress audience even with Shahrukh Khan because it lacked both good contestants and drama quotient. If you actually see original “Wipeout” it’s one hell of a funny show and it does it without SRK type host.

Host: Even though host is 3rd most important thing it indeed plays an important part in taking the show to next level i.e. from success to mega-success (like Amitabh in case of KBC), Khatron Ke Khiladi (with Akshay Kumar as host) or from utter failure to moderate success (Dus Ka Dum could have bombed badly if Salman wasn’t there). But in case a show lacks above 2 important characteristics chances of it failing increases- SRK could never save Zor Ka Jhatka and even KBC with SRK couldn’t attract audience as much as Big B. My tip: Get a host with good sense of humor or with lot of character- Raghu/Rajiv and Rannvijay are known for their tough/macho characters and they don’t need Akshay Kumar.

Plot: Borrowed or not, plot does play an important part in a reality show’s success. How? Well first thing is it identifies your target audience. KBC had a national appeal, Roadies & Bigg Boss have youth appeal, Dance India Dance is liked by a specific set of audience and so is Masterchef. Plot helps a production house lay its marketing plan and execute it. Beware! If top 3 things are not in place, plot will never help you win your audience.

Editing: Editing is an important part of any reality show, specially of those shows in which cameras roll continuously. In my opinion India’s Minute to Win it suffers from really bad editing as against its US counterpart. Dance India Dance is edited very well despite it being a talent reality show. There is always a connection between the contestants, Mithun da and 3 judges (Remo, Terence and Gita). Good editing is evident from a show which keeps you glued during the program, bad editing gives you enough reasons to switch :)

Connection: Well this is second last part of “what it takes to create a good reality show” but trust me, unless your audience feel “connected” with your show, you CAN NOT make it work. Connection happens if you get all of the above things “just” right for your show. There is no formula for this, it just happens!

Audience: Audience may include either studio audience or audience watching at home or both. In KBC, studio audience is well trained before shoot- they are told when to clap, how much to clap, when to laugh, who sits in front, who sits in background, what should be your facial expressions.. everything! It’s like a controlled backdrop scenario which is very important taking into consideration the plot of the show. In case of shows like Minute to Win it studio audience is supposed to be very energetic (which sadly doesn’t happen in Indian version). In talent based shows like DID or Indian Idol studio audience makes singing or dancing more enjoyable by clapping and dancing along with the contestants. Shows like Wipeout expect audience sitting at home to be their real audience and the host directly tries to talk to that audience. Audience is important because it makes or breaks your show- understand your audience!

These are the key elements of a reality show, there are many other like sound, camera, direction which are important but they are common to all TV shows.

Do you think there are other important aspects? Please comment..

Would you hire KD Pathak for your Court Case?

Those who are watching this show will surely say “YES”. And those who are not, well do try to watch the show! Did you know that KD has not lost a single case .. Till Date. You might ask who is KD !! He is better know as ‘Advocate K.D Pathak’. You might recollect him as Mr Rishabh Bajaj and Mihir Virani. He has also been referred as the Amitabh Bachchan of small screen. Adaalat is a show about KD Pathak, a sophisticated, witty and yet unconventional lawyer as he can get his clients out of the tightest of situations. But most importantly KD stands not for his client, but for Justice. Did I mention that he is a quick thinker as well…!!!

Well he has this habit to get into cases where everyone has given up on the accused and when all the doors are shut. He has an amazing eye for detail and an never ending thirst for knowledge. He always seems to know enough about every profession, and what he doesn’t know he covers up with his smartness.

They say that KD can do the impossible as no one can see the case from the angle KD does. He has managed to win most complex of all cases and with every new case the interest level of the audience also rises. He manages to dig for loopholes in the prosecution’s and manages to turn the entire case around. The show had started back in November 2010 and has recently completed 100+ episodes. It is getting popular amongst the audience who have glued on the some amazing cases. And the writers of the show have managed to bring in interesting characters episode after episode.

So are you ready to get on with the court proceedings? Don’t worry, all you have to do is just sit back and enjoy the show. Do let us know your favourite cases and your favourite characters in the show. Watch Adaalat on Sat and Sun at 8:00pm on Sony Entertainment Television.

Happy Viewing.

Are you missing Double Roles in Hindi Cinema?

When was the last time you saw a movie with double role? Finding it difficult to recollect right?? Well, double role used to be the most popular formula of filmmakers. The trend of double role movies is as old as 1960 and today almost every top actor has acted in at least one movie where they played double role.

The trend is so popular if we look at stats we will be amazed to learn that from 1960 till 2009, that is 50 yrs., there has not been a single year without at least one movie in this category. But somehow I feel that in the past decade, the double role formula fizzled out and not many filmmakers exploited twin characterized scripts. As compared with 1998 when there were 11 movies in this category in single year.

As kids we used to loves such movies, the curiosity of these double characters use to leave us amazed and we always ended asking our elders “How can there be two characters who look the same acting together” Audiences were always happy to see two heroes (in the form of two different characters) at the price of one ticket. It was a treat to the fans and a total paisa vasool to watch their favorite actors in twin role…….

There have been loads of such examples that have dazzled on the silver screen. Let’s go down the memory and relive such amazing movies that have ensured you get your money’s worth…. Double the amount ;)

-       Dilip Kumar in Ram Aur Shyam, Daastan, Bairaag,

-       Raj Kumar in Karamyogi

-       Sanjeev Kumar in Naya Din Nayi Raat

-       Amitabh Bachchan in  The Great Gambler, Don

-       Dev Anand in  Hum Dono

-       Kamal Haasan in Chachi 420, Appu Rajja and Hindustani

-       Dharmendra  in Yakeen

-       Sharmila tagore in Mausam and An Evening in Paris

-       Sridevi in Chaalbaaz

-       Hema Malini in Seeta Aur Geeta

-       Govinda in Aankhen

-       Anil Kapoor in Kishen Kanhaiya

-       Akshay Kumar in Aflatoon

-       Salman Khan in Judwa,

-       Sunil Shetty in Gopi Kishan

-       Hrithik Roshan in Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai

-       Priyanka Chopra in Love Story 2050

-       Shahid Kapoor in Kaminey

-       Shahrukh in Duplicate , Don and Om Shanti Om

Well, the list of Double Role movies is endless… with more than 226 Double/triple role movies being released since 1951 we wish to see more of these kinds hitting the theatre. Hope that the filmmakers treat their audience with more of such movies. Though not all Double role movies were successful, but it does attract a good crowd. So let’s wait and watch how this age old formula of Bollywood works in the present times.

Is your favorite movie song and serial the same…. !!

Strange… right… Well, don’t be surprised but your favorite movie songs might actually end up becoming your favorite serial too.

Gone are those days when every other serial name would start with K (No offense to the makers), but that was a trend and a successful one. Times have changed now, and so does the trends. Now it’s a latest fashion to have movie songs as the title of a serial. You might agree that Films and Television always had a unique relationship since the beginning, and this trend is taking it one step ahead. Oh yes, I know you might now start recollecting those names ;)

Well, Let me help you with those amazing songs that are now the title of the most famous serials (some are popular in terms of content and some are popular just by their names) I will not get into the details of which are popular just by their names ;) It’s up to you to decide that.

So, let’s start with the TV Soaps that have got their titles from the movie songs :

  • Kuch Toh Log Kahenge“, a hit song picturised on Sharmila Tagore and Rajesh Khanna in “Amar Prem“, is now the love story between Mohnish Behl and Kritika Kamra
  • The title of Ekta Kapoor’s “Bade Acche Lagte Hain” is picked up from the song in the 1976 movie “Balika Badhu“, about the arranged marriage of two teenagers, played by Sachin Pilgaonker and Rajni Sharma
  • Dekha Ek Khwaab“, has been taken from the evergreen song “Dekha ek khwaab toh yeh silsilay hue” picturised on Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha in the 1981 film “Silsila
  • Sapno Se Bhare Naina” is from Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s composition from the soundtrack of “Luck By Chance
  • Iss Pyaar ko Main Kya Naam Doon” is another show that takes its title from a song from Tusshar Kapoor-Kareena Kapoor-starrer “Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai
  • Kya Hua Tera Vaada“, is from the movie Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin in 1977. Sung by the great Mohammad Rafi
  • Sasural Genda Phool” is from the movie Delhi 6, and sung by Rekha Bharadwaj & others under music composition by A.R.Rehman

And so on…So let me take this opportunity to ask you, is this a healthy trend? Or has the Television Industry run out of creative ideas? Well, time will only tell and of course the viewers who make it a hit or a flop. The TRP’s of the show will have the final say on this interesting trend ;) So, do let us know if you come across any such serials that have its title been taken from a movie song. Don’t forget to share your views on this latest trend.

Which is your Favourite Bollywood Dialogue….?

I am sure that it would be very difficult for you to single out your favourite movie dialogue…. Don’t worry, I am also sailing in the same boat as you. There have been endless movies been made, and there are some amazing dialogues that have left a strong footprint in our minds. Not necessary that we were born in that era, but there are still some lines that are alive in our hearts forever. Following is an attempt to relive those celebrated dialogues that the movie industry has gifted us. Are you still thinking about your favourite Movie Dialogue… Let me try to help you out…. Hope you might find a few of those in the list below….

Sholay …. Well you might wonder that this is not a Dialogue… well, to be honest, every scene, every moment of this movie is a masterpiece… Everyone, almost everyone knows the famous dialogues from this movie…

” Kitne aadmi the” Just 3 words, but still the way Mr Amjad Khan has said it on the silver screen, it’s just awesome.  “Jo dar gaya woh mar gaya”Well, this is one such dialogue that we end up using in our personal lives too…. Have you ever used this….!!!!  “Arrey oh sambha kitney admi they” ?”  ”Sardar… maine aapkaa namak khaayaa hai sardaar…”   ”Arre O Saambha… kitna inaam rakkhe hai sarkaar ham par” How about this…. “Yu ke ye kaun bola?”   And the very famous scene on the Water Tank “  Arre gaanw-waalo sunaa tumne bhaaeyo, mausi bhi taiyaar hai basanti bhi taiyaar hai isliye marna cancel” The list is endless, and one can just go on and on…. It would not be fair to rate these timeless classics… Each dialogue is a gem and can’t be compared.

Let’s come to some more of such classics that might take you back to your favourite lines…… Who can forget the intense scene between Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan… Just one word said it all - Babu Moshai…The moment we hear this, there are Goosebumps, and we can visualize the death scene of Anand. And also the way he kept on saying, ” Zindagi aur mauth upar vale ke haath hain jahapana use naatho aap badal sakthe na mein hum sab tho rang manch ke katputhliyaan hain jinki dor upar vale ki ungli pe bandhi hain kab kaun kaisa uthega yeh koi nahin batha saktha hain !! “

Time to move on to another such intense dialogue; again just 4 words made it such a huge hit…. “Mere paas Maa hai”, followed by “Khush to bahut hoge aaj tum” and “Jao pehle us aadmi ka sign lekar aao jisne……..” again it’s not possible to pen all of them down, as each one is just amazing. What about Amar Prem and its unforgetable dialouge  ” Arri oh Pushpa, Arrey i hate tears re” Also there are some dialogues that are still used in today’s times, no prices for guessing -  ” Don ko pakad pana mushkil hi nahin namumkin hai”

Let me try to just put across some more dialogues, which might confuse you while deciding your favourite Dialogue… Well, just kidding, just trying to take you back in time which these dialogues… Mooche ho to Nathulal jaise ho….warna na ho” ” Mogambo khush hua”  ” I can talk englis, i can walk englis because english is a very phunny language”  ”I love you kkkkkkk…………….kiran”  ”Rishtey amin to hum tumhare baap lagte hain magar naam hai shenshah”  ” Tarkih par tarikh” “Hum jaha pe khade ho jaate hein, line wahi se shuru hoti hai”  And these two are my all time favorites “ Tumhe charo taraf se gher liya gaya hai apne aap ko kanoon ke hawale kar do.”  and  ”Kanoon ke haath bahut lambe hote hain”

Hopefully after going through some of these dialogues you might have relived those amazing moments, and also might recollect those times when you might have used these at some point of time in your lives. Do let us know your favourite dialogues.

Sushil Kumar- first Indian to win 5 Crore in KBC “Episode airs 2 Nov”

My heartbeat grew 5 times faster when I read this tweet from Sr Bachchan last night-

Earns a salary of Rs 6500/- walks out in an hour with 5 crore rupees…that is what KBC is all about… ‘aam se khas bana deta hai’. This man has displayed a brilliant play of wit and knowledge. We are still reeling with the effect of maximum win. It was an incredible event.

It is certainly unbelievable and implausible to see such a simple and common man to win an amount that can fulfill his lifetime wishes. Sushil Kumar is celebrating his best-ever Diwali this year as he became the first person to win the full prize money of 5 crore rupees in the game show “Kaun Banega Crorepati” . This common man proved that given an opportunity, everyone is capable of reaching the heights.

This episode which was shot yesterday in Mumbai will be aired on Sony TV on 2nd November. Sushil correctly answered the jackpot question asked by Amitabh Bachchan. Sushil Kumar is a 27-year old computer operator and a part time tutor in a village in Champaran district in Bihar.

Sushil and his wife were moved to tears when Sr Bachchan handed over the Rs 5 crore cheque to them. Sushil is registered for minimum wage MNREGA scheme in his village. He doesn’t own a TV at his home currently and used to watch KBC at his neighbour’s place. He recently got married and when asked that what he will do with his prize money, he was excited yet effortless to answer “He plans to buy a new house for his wife, buy himself an impressive library and provide financial help to his brothers.”

This man has set the inspiration for others too who have dreams to make big in their life. He has created history and proved that your determination can bring success in your life.

The entire set of KBC was extremely excited and joyful after Sushil’s win and got everyone in a jubilant mood.

Kaun Banega Ra.One?

Did you watch “Kaun Banega Crorepati” on Thursday that had Shahrukh Khan as celebrity guest? If the answer is no then you have saved 2 hours of your precious life with the overdose of Ra.One’s promotional marketing (SRK’s much hyped super hero flick).

It was genuinely an overkill of the hype that is generally created before the release of any film. SRK just couldn’t stop promoting the movie at every instance possible. The hilarious part is how even “computer ji” threw questions around the movie and SRK.

Some examples that i could recollect from my memory for you:

- The show apparently kicked off with Senior Bachchan congratulating SRK for his upcoming movie

- Senior Bachchan bragging all over about the movie and its budget, how it is one of the most expensive movies ever made in Indian film industry

- There was a question with answer as Kareena Kapoor (female lead of Ra.One) and that followed by calling her where she asked SRK to sing the famous song “chamak challo” of the same movie

- There was another question that had a line from the movie and answer with the name of a character from movie called “chitti” & Shahrukh was happy to answer and announce that he recently heard it on the sets

- There were 3 different questions which had answers related to India’s first F1 track that SRK recently inaugurated, Nokia for whom he is the brand ambassador and also the movie Asoka he did.

We have our doubts that these questions were a mere coincident or again well scripted promotional episode of Ra.One movie!!
