There have been news reports that Agneepath (2012) has earned a record Rs 23 crore on Day 1. Awesome stuff.. right !!

Yes its true that Agneepath (1990) was not a box office hit, but its remake has broken all records ie breaking the record of the first day collection of Salman Khan’s ‘Bodyguard’, which had stood at approximately Rs 21 crore. The 1990 cult classic -’Agneepath’, directed by Mukul Anand, featured Amitabh Bachchan playing the iconic character of Vijay Dinanath Chauhan Kancha, while Danny Denzongpa played Kancha Cheena. Mithun Chakraborty also played a memorable role in the film, produced by Yash Johar. So, does the remake live up to the expectations of those who have watched the original movie??

Well, most of us do end up comparing the two movies and the trend is the not all remake movies have performed well at the box office. So what is that makes this remake different ??? To be honest I too did not have much expectations when I watched the 2012 version. To my surprise there was no ” Krishnan Iyer M.A”, which was played by Mithun Chakraborty. I am sure most of us remember his excellent performance in the movie. Tinu Anand ie Nathu is also missing from the latest version. But why are we comparing the two movies? Is it fair to compare the two movies? But there are loads of new things to look for in the latest movie. There are some brilliant performances by Hrithik Roshan and Sanjay Dutt. Hrithik brings alive the attitude and feel of the orginal Vijay Dinanath Chauhan with his subtle yet powerful performance. On the contrary, Sanjay Dutt has proved himself to be the evilest of the villains, the industry has seen by far. The key difference between AGNEEPATH the original and AGNEEPATH the remake lies in the fact that the remake has been shot extensively in Mandwa, while the original was shot largely in Mumbai. Karan Johar has been able to recreate the magic of AGNEEPATH which his father did more than 20 years ago, and the audience of the present times. The veteran actors Rishi Kapoor and Om Puri have given an amazing performance and have made sure that they leave a mark on the audience. Am i missing something… oh yes the two ladies. Priyanka has done a great job by playing the typical Marathi girl and love interest of Hrithik and Katrina as ‘Chikni Chameli’ introduces you to her wild side.

Here are some interesting facts about Agneepath that might interest you:

Anand had to shave his head bald to make the age difference between him andAmitabh Bachchan, as he played the role of his uncle. (Agneepath 1990)

To give Amitabh Bachchan the gangster look, his mouth was stuffed with cotton wool underneath both cheeks, as was Marlon Brando’s in The Godfather (Agneepath 1990)

The entire film was shot in Diu with a few scenes shot in a mill in Mumbai. Hrithik Roshan and Sanjay Dutt both undertook a strict exercise regime to gain muscle for the film. (Agneepath 2012)

Mithun Chakraborty’s unique role of Kishnan Iyer was inspired by one of his room mates of his struggling days, before he become a popular film star.(Agneepath 1990)

The team consisting of around 200 members, had to carry all the materials from Mumbai and walk on the sand with heavy instruments to create the sets three-and-a-half kilometers away from the beach, without any approach road. (Agneepath 2012)

So are you ready to have Vijay Deenanath Chauhan and Kancha Cheena back on the silver screen? Are you ready to revisit Mandwa?

Do let us know your views about this latest remake. And also do let us know which one is your favorite - 2012 or 1990

You might say that that Mona Singh was always present and was seen on Television. Well, you are right, she had never left Television. But what about serials!!!!…. I am sure that no one will forget her performance in “Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin “.

But that was way back in 2003, and had a successful run till 2006. What after that… she was not to be seen in any other serials. Well, In March 2007, she signed an exclusive contract with Sony Entertainment Television to be the brand ambassador for the channel for 13 months. And then came Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa in 2006, which again got her back in limelight and all over Television and she won the 1st season of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. She also hosted the season 2 of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and there was no looking back. Soon she was the host of all the 4 seasons of Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega. And then back to host Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa season 4.

You might ask, what about the serials… has she stopped working in serials…? Well, you will soon see her back in action. Balaji Telefilms is all set to launch her back in a new Serial “Kya Huaa Tera Vaada“. So what is this serial all about? Let’s get to the details.

It’s a story about a couple Pradeep Singh and Mona, who are living independently in Mumbai. The couple had been married for 10years and have dealt with several situations together in the past. As the episodes move forward, that too will be reveled. Pradeep (played by Pawan Shankar) has stepped out of his father’s business and house and wants to carve his own niche. Mona (played by Mona Singh) has stood by him in this endeavor. In-spite of that Pradeep and Mona’s love life is taking a new turn and also their life is revolved around their 3 kids and their work. Oh yes, they have 3 kids, Bulbul,Rano and Rajbir. Mona whose only priority was her husband today has her 3 children asking for her attention and at times even demanding it. Hers is the classic case of a woman who ceases to play any other role except that of a mom.

Interesting right… well, I guess many young couples out there might end up saying … “Hey that’s my story”… “I too have gone through this phase”….and so on. So will this new serial take Mona Singh back to the top of television , as her 1st serial did…. ??? Well only time will tell. So are you excited to watch this serial… are you ready to witness your life (at least some of you) on television. Your wait will be over on 30th Jan . As always looking forward to your views, review, and comments about this serial. Happy Viewing.

Here you go, you might say that I have already used Filmfare and Oscars in the same sentence Just Kidding. Time to get serious…

Filmfare is just around the corner and Oscars too will be out with its Nominations on 24th Jan. So what are we talking about !!!! The reason for writing about this topic was to clear the air between to the two Awards. There are a section of people, oops fans that say that Filmfare is the Oscars of Bollywood. Where as the other section of fans don’t agree. They have gone one step ahead and said “How can you use Filmfare and Oscars in the same sentence?”

So, what next !! Following are some of the points that might help you to decide if you can (not) use both the award functions in one sentence.

It is said that Filmfare only nominates movies that are a huge hit and does not encourage small budget movies and movies that have failed to earn corers.

(Example : Filmfare has two awards for Best Movies – Popular and Critics) In my opinion, there can only be One Best Movie… like the Oscars.. What say!!!

Some say Filmfare focuses more on performances during the awards, and somehow end up ignoring the real hero “Cinema”

(Well, i don’t think I need to give an example, you might all agree with the performance example.. Right !!) Oscars always gives preference to the Movies and its makers.

Need I mention about the low standard of Jokes year after year at the Filmfare functions…. (Sorry SRK fans, but just sharing the truth)

( You might say that even in Oscars, they crack jokes… Well, do you mean Cheap Jokes.. or just Jokes )

Did you know that Katrina Kaif has been nominated for Mere Brother Ki Dulhan (Best Actress)… Let me ask you… do you think that she even deserves to be nominated for this prestigious category ?? You can chek the Nominations in the earlier Post “Are you ready for the 57th FilmFare Awards 2012!!“

And the best part, did you know that Vishal Dadlani and Niranjan Iyengar have been nominated for Best Lyrics category for their song Chammak challo (RA.One) Are you surprised?? Shocked?

There are many such examples, and the list is endless. By this time you might have labeled me a Oscars fan, and me being biased to the Oscars. Well this is not true. I have been growing up watching both the awards. But somehow overs the years, there have been so may Award Functions that have sprung up in India. And every other Corporate house and TV channel are promoting their awards shows. Hence in a sense to prove which is better, these award functions end up doing the impossible and the unimaginable drama to get TRP’s. It would not be wrong to say that it’s as good as a Naach Gana show. I am not saying that we should be like Oscars, but can’t we have one award function that really celebrates Cinema… The real Hero.

As always looking forward to your views on this topic. Happy Viewing.

Indians must have been familiar with the concept of Akhaada, and the Wrestling competitions, known as dangals, held in villages. But soon this will take the center stage and will soon come into your living rooms. Don’t worry, it’s totally safe Colors channel has launched a new sports entertainment reality show called ‘Ring Ka King’. It consists of 30 wrestlers (Indian and international). Most of us have grown up watching WWF and TNA (Total Nonstop Action Wrestling). We are very well aware of the concept, but as this is a new show, let’s get to the details The reality show is set to debut on Colors Network on January 28, 2012, and guess what; Harbhajan Singh has been signed on as goodwill ambassador.

“Ring Ka King” will spread over 13 weeks and will end just before the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches begin. (perfect timing) In the first four weeks, viewers will see some exciting matches that will crown a heavyweight champion and a tag team champion. And in the subsequent weeks, the champions will get a chance to save their title and fight against the other contenders, who will come their way and throw open challenges to claim their belt.

Well, you might say what’s new about this show!!!

Don’t you think that it’s kind of outdated content? No doubt that WWF and TNA were a huge hit, and also had some amazing wrestling stars that we all remember even today. But as time has gone by, the audience is aware that it’s all scripted and the fights are as good as fake. It will have the same drama, almost same action and stunts. So, why does Colors want to get back this old horse back in the limelight?. May be they are trying to promote the Indian Wrestles and trying to give them the exposure that they deserve. Also it might be an attempt to give the Indian wrestlers an International exposure.

So will you watch “Ring Ka King”? The show has been produced by Endemol, and no doubt that it has created shows like “Indian Idol“, “Bigg Boss” and “Fear Factor – Khatron Ke Khiladi“, but will “Ring Ka King” take them to the next level…. Well, only time will tell…. 13 weeks to be precise!

Today’s blog is not about Bigg Boss, Roadies or any other reality tv show in India. It is about the level to which show makers and promoters can stoop to, so as to gain TRPs (Television Rating Points) and see their shows’ gaining top position. Today’s front page news of Hindustan Times’ supplement paper “HT City” took me by shock when I read-

A contestant was raped on a reality show by another contestant while she was apparently asleep and this was shown on live television. The night cameras of the show Big Brother (Brazilian version) covered the entire episode where Model Daniel Echaniz forced himself on Monique Amin who had passed out after having alcohol in a party. When Amin was asked next day about the incident she had almost no clue what happened.

Back home in India all reality show makers have condemned this act and have given statements like “the rules are much stricter on our show”, “we don’t allow alcohol on our show to avoid any such happening” and many other. But the question is still the same. How far can these reality shows go to gain so called ‘TRPs”. Bigg Boss Season 5 that recently ended depicted a lot of violence between the contestants even though it was not in physical form too much. Other shows like Roadies and Splitsvilla on MTV are ill-famous that the contestants who are aggressive, violent or abusive are given a chance above other contestants who want to participate in the show.

The problem with today’s reality shows is that it is ok for the producers to show anything until you get under the knife of censor board or other active bodies that control the content show on television. We can easily see loud and violent behavior, nudity, crime and many other negative aspects of our society on television mostly through these reality shows.

Also are we as audience getting too easy as to what our younger generation especially kids watch on television? Can we let them watch a male hurling demeaning accusation on a female’s character? Can you let your kids watch violence to the most inappropriate level? Is there a shortage of freely available porn on internet that we need to see a female getting raped on live television?

Let me ask you a bigger question instead- Do you think even in Indian reality shows incidents like this might have happened but producers might not have guts to telecast them yet? Do you think this incident will make TV producers bolder?

For some of you this must be a very “Easy to answer” question while for some others it might be difficult. Fortunately or unfortunately no one has ever asked me this question. I often wonder, if someone came up with such a question -what my answer will be! At the very first instance you might end up saying that a TV is a TV (an idiot box is what it is also referred to). You switch it on; you switch it off, surf channels and then watch your favourite shows or movies. Some get glued to the News Channels, kids to their cartoon shows and some to the latest music channels. In short it’s an entertainment tool that helps you to pass on time.

What does Television mean to you??

Well, to answer this question, I will have to take you back in time when there used to be just 1 or 2 television sets in our entire building. I mean just imagine just 1-2 TV set and we all used to try our best to get a glimpse of it. There was only one channel “Doordarshan”. Trend that time was that people used to finish their work well in advance just to ensure that they don’t miss their favourite show (the culture of repeat telecast was not present in those days). Especially on Sundays the entire family and the neighboring kids used to just spend their mornings in front of the television. Somehow I feel that there was a sense of emotional attachment towards television. It was a proud moment for the families who used to buy a television and specially if it’s a color TV then one was considered super cool . And people would actually visit once to see what it looks like. It was more like a family member than just being an idiot box (as it is considered today).

Television in those days was a medium to bring the entire family under one roof and have a gala time (My personal opinion)

Today, things are totally different, television is a common thing in every household. You can also see an army of Dishes on the terrace and balcony’s, as Cable Television / Satellite has completely changed the viewing experience. Now at the touch of a button, you can order a Movie on your screen, watch news 24/7, enjoy your favourite shows with repeats. Some how I feel that the importance and the value of television is lost as there are so many options available in terms of content. Now you will not find that excitement and emotional quotient towards television. Also you might find that families and kids like to watch television in their separate rooms. The culture of watching it together is somehow lost. Well as times have changed, we too have to move on with it.

What are your views on this, what does television mean to you…. Looking forward to your wonderful and golden memories that you had for television in those days, or for that matter in the present times too.

Happy Viewing.

Oh yes, the biggest and arguably the best Award Show that Indian Cinema has ever witnessed….Till date. And it is all set to knock on your Television sets soon. The Filmfare Awards are presented annually by The Times Group and is one of the oldest and most prominent film events given for Hindi films in India.

The honour is been given to both artistic and technical excellence of professionals in the Hindi language film industry of India. The Filmfare Awards have been often referred to as Hindi film industry’s equivalent to the Oscars. (Well it’s a debatable topic, let’s not get into it) I know you must be eagerly waiting to find out the nominations for this year’s FilmFare Awards, but before that let me take this opportunity to share some interesting facts about these awards.

Did you know:

- Dilip Kumar, Shahrukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan have won 8 awards each till date(Best Actor + Best Supporting Actor)

- Surprisingly, the biggest blockbuster hit in the history of Bollywood – Sholay, won only one Filmfare Award in 1975 and that too for Best Editing.

- ‘Do Bigha Zameen’ was the first movie to win ‘Filmfare Award For Best Film’.

- In the 25th year of Filmfare Award ceremony, the statue was made of silver, while in the 50th year of its celebration, gold status were given.

- Filmfare Award was initially named ‘Clare Awards’, after the ‘Times of India’ film critic – Clare Mendonca.

- In 1969, Sunil Dutt organized a party for Dilip Kumar, when the latter beat him for ‘Filmfare Best Actor Award’. This started the trend of post-award parties in Bollywood.

- In 2006, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie ‘Black’ won 11 Filmfare awards, the most awards won by a movie in the history of Filmfare Awards, till date.

The moment we hear “Javer Akthar”, all we say is WOW, what an amazing talent, what command over words. We are all too small to praise and write about him, but taking this chance to dedicate this post to Javed Saab. What better occasion to choose writing about him than on his 67th Birthday. Not many would know that his original name was Jadoo, taken from a line in a poem written by his father: “Lamba, lamba kisi jadoo ka fasana hoga”. But soon he was given an official name of Javed since it was the closest to the word jadoo.

Did you know, in his early years living in Mumbai, he managed to write the dialogue for a minor film for Rs. 100. Soon he joined with his friend Salim Khan to develop the story for Adhikar. And the world knows them as Salim-Javed. Both of them had a wonderful run in the film Industry with super-hit movies like Andaz, Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay and Don. You will not be surprised to know that Javed Saab has won the National Award five times and won the Filmfare Award fourteen times, seven times for Best Script writing and seven times for Best Lyrics.

No doubt that he is a true gem to this Film Industry, and will always be one of the strongest pillar to this Industry. He is not just a poet, lyricist and scriptwriter, but a true gentleman, and a man of his words. iDubba and team takes this opportunity to wish him Happy Birthday .

Will leave you all with his amazing poetry in “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara”.

Dilon mein tum apni betaabiyaan leke chal rahe ho Toh zinda ho tum

Nazar mein khwaabon ki bijliyaan leke chal rahe ho Toh zinda ho tum

Hawaa ke jhonkon ke jaise azad rehna seekho

Tum ek dariya ke jaise lehron mein behna seekho

Har ek lamhe se tum milo khole apni baahein

Har ek pal ik naya samaan dekhein yeh nigaahein

Jo apni aankhon mein hairaaniyaan leke chal rahe ho Toh zinda ho tum

Dilon mein tum apni betaabiyaan leke chal rahe ho Toh zinda ho tum

Do let us know you favourite Javed Akthar written Movie, Dialouge, Poetry or Song. Happy Viewing!
