Even though IPL matches were interesting and there was a lot of buzz about match fixing; it’s steady in terms of the ratings. Surprisingly Life Ok’s Mahadev has gone up immensely; from 1.1 to 2.3. That’s an awesome hike! It took Life Ok to another level altogether, and the difference is noticeable in its GRPs. Even Saubhagyavato Bhava rose to 1.4 from 1.1. Kudos to life Ok team!

Star Plus’ Iss Pyaar Ko Kyaa Naam Doon and Pratigya have dropped dramatically! Seems like, Mr. Barun Sobti’s MIA trick is not working in favor of Iss Pyaar Ko Kyaa Naam Doon. And about Pratigya, well, there has to be less of drama and more of story to keep people hooked on.

Sony TV’s over all GRPs has decreased and there are only 2 shows with good ratings viz. Kya Huaa Tera Vaada and Bade Acche Laggte Hain. Rest all shows have low ratings and nothing exciting to look forward to in terms of the content.

GRP wise Star Plus is still at number 1 in GECs, followed by Zee TV, Colors and Sony TV respectively. Few weeks back, Sony was on number 2, then number 3 and now it’s on number 4.

Above all shows ended with very low ratings, except Sasural Genda Phool. But Sasural Genda Phool team along with Star team felt it’s good to end up a show on a high note rather than unnecessarily dragging it. But, one just cannot blame ratings for the same. There are a lot of other issues to be dealt with while making a TV show. And to shut it, is a big decision for channel as well as the producers. Soaps are such, one track doesn’t work and the story is changed. After a while, the original plot or the crux of the show is lost. This has been witnessed in a lot of shows. And that could be one of the major reasons for them to shut. Moreover, creatives can’t experiment a lot these days as they all have to work with lot of limitations.

Also, as Imagine TV shut, its all 5 shows shut too! 14 shows being shut in a span of 2 months and a few new ones have already replaced them. So, what happens next? A few new ones are in pipeline which will be launched post IPL; such as, Byaah Hamari Bahu Ka, Indian Idol and post that KBC on Sony TV. Also, Jhalak Dikhla Jaa’s next season is around the corner, but this time on Colors.

There are rumors about Mann Ki Awaaz Pratigya (Star Plus) and Shubh Vivah on (Sony) soon to go off air. Nothing has been official about it, but there have been talks about it. As they say, there is no smoke without fire. So, which shows will replace them? Will the new shows be able to garner the same ratings for the channel or prove to be otherwise?

It was time for the entire nation to find out about the 3rd social evil that our society is living with, you can also say that we are used to this issue. As always the suspense was kept till the last minute about last episode of Satyamev Jayate that aired yesterday. There was also a short promo that showed Aamir talking about about the passion of Indians. And then on Sunday he revealed the issue,  Indian marriages and the evils of dowry harassment.

Did you know that the earlier two episodes that dealt with social issues like female infanticide and child abuse, had marked a milestone with 90 million viewer ship, which is the highest ever for any Indian TV Show.

The 3rd eposide was about the custom of demanding dowry from a bride’s family when a wedding is fixed has been prevalent in India for several decades. You might say that is a well know fact and everyone knows that it happens almost everywhere in India. Well this event often takes an evil turn when the bride is tortured or killed just because her family is unable to meet  demands from the in-laws. As shown in the previous episodes there are laws in India about this but this social evil continues to flourish.

In this eposide there was a sense of keeping the shock value down, yet it managed to make an impact on the audience. As you might have noticed that there were a lot of young people in the audience in yesterday’s episode. May be Aamir and team were trying to send a message to the youth about this important issue. The show did focus on the ways to combat this evil and made a lot of emphasis that best way to do this is by empowering women. Also it was evident that Aamir did not want to hold anyone guilty nor did he mention about the Indian Laws unlike previous eposides. But he stronlgy feels that families and the members of each and every community must come together and take a stand against it.

As always the guests and the stories shown in the show are very shocking and one of the guest just kept asking one question “Is this the kind of society we live in?“

The Promos are all over Sony and as they say in Bollywood – It’s Different

“Byah Humari Bahu Ka”, is a new show on “Sony TV” by JD Majethia. Jamnadas Majethia is an Indian TV serial actor/director and producer. He is a theater actor who is best known for his Gujarati and Sindhi plays and dramas. On stage, he has been active in Gujarati theater for the last 20 years. So what’s common in serials like Khichdi, Sarabhai v/s Sarabhai, Baa Bahoo Aur Baby and Jasuben Jayantilal Joshi Ki Joint Family? Well apart from having come from the esteemed Hats Off Productions, all the shows had a Gujarati background. So is this new show also about a Gujarati Family? Well based on the Promos it’s clear that this too is about a Vaishnav Family, ie Gujarati Family.

So now that you know about the Producer and a bit of a background about what to expect, let’s take it one step ahead. Time to reveal the story

This is the story of Krish and his soul mate Rajnibala. Krish is also known as Gopikishan, who has never been in love before but soon based on one look at Rajnibala he realises that she is his soul mate.  Krish is from a rich family and Rajnibala belongs to a poor family. This serial also shows the journey of Rajnibala as she adapts in the new environment.

Now it’s time for the star cast.

Well, Popular television actor Gaurav Khanna, seen in serials like ‘Kumkum’,’ Jeevan Saathi,’ ‘Meri Doli Tere Angana’ and’ Yeh Pyar Na Hoga Kam’, has been roped in by Sony TV. Trishika Tiwari has also been roped in as one of the actors. She is known for her stints in Geet Hui Sabse Parayi (Star One) and Phulwa (Colors). Her character’s name is Namita who is bubbly, chirpy and the over-pampered child of the family. She is Gaurav Khanna’s sister and in spite of being naughty has a serious back story. Shrenu Parikh, who was last seen in Hawan has been finalised to play the female protagonist in the show.

Wait till you hear this  - News is that Byah Hamari Bahu Ka will air at 8 pm starting May 28, so that means that Kuch Toh Log Kahenge will finally move to 11 pm slot and the the show has already started promoting it.

When a popular serial takes a generation leap not many serials are able to recapture the flush of success enjoyed before it. But this has not stopped the Leap Factor trend and it’s catching up with the serial makers. Normally the reason for a leap is that a particular serial is not doing well at the Box Office…ohh for television it’s known as TRP’s. Television Rating Points – TRP is the criterion that indicates the popularity of a channel or program and this data is very useful for the advertisers.

Lets find out the serials that have taken a LEAP and managed to gain more TRPs - 

Uttaran, This is a TV serial was aired on Colors Television Channel and in the first six months the show revolved around two small girls Ichcha and Tapasya who were from totally different social and economic background.  But soon the show took a 10-year leap Both Ichcha and Tapasya turned into adults. And recently the show took another leap of almost 20 years which is showing Ichcha and Tapasya’s kids all grown up. ‘Pavitra Rishta‘ took 18 yrs gen leap when a misunderstanding between Manav (Hiten Tejwani) and wife, Archana (Ankita Lokhande) is beyond repair. TRP ratings have been very positive for ‘Pavitra Rishta‘ and the Leap effect has worked really well for the serial.

Phulwa  was thought to be one of the biggest shows for Colors channel, but it did failed to rake in high Television Rating Points (TRPs) and then soon they were gearing up for a ten year leap. As they say “When the going gets tough, time leap comes to the rescue”. That’s exactly what happened to yet another serial “Chhoti Si Zinndagi“. This show was all set to go ahead by 10 years. The most recent example is Kya Huaa Tera Vaada, as the story of Pradeep Singh and Mona Singh a young couple who live in Mumbai with their three children. The story goes on taking may be the smallest leap on television of 6 months. After this leap Pradeep realizes and finally confesses his love for Anushka to his family and plans to break his and Mona’s marriage. Kya Huaa Tera Vaada has shown a slight improvement in terms of TRP’s (from 2.2 to 2.4 since last week) you can check out our TRP talks post for the ratings.

This topic cannot be concluded without talking about Sony TV‘s and Balaji’s ‘Bade Acche Laggte Hai‘. It has been very popular with the audience and has a very loyal base of fans. You can read more about it in our previous post “Is ‘Bade Ache Lagte Hain’ heading for a leap?” However, in the recent times it has seen a dip in the TRPs and that has led the creatives to take a few drastic measures. And there were rumours that there might be a leap soon. There was a lot of discussion on Social Media about this event, many were of the opinion that Leaps in serials at times takes away the essence of the show. The audience who regularly follow the shows end up connecting with the characters and the story, and Gen Leaps do take away that connect and most of the times resulting in losing the fan base.

On the other hand in terms of creativity one can argue that in some cases Generation Leap is a must when there are child artists (Uttaran and Chhoti Si Zinndagi) and hence Leap is a must.

I Luv My India was created by DJ’s A Creative’s Unit, surprising or not it’s the same Production House as Parvarrish which airs on Sony TV. Some may wonder why I Luv My India didn’t do as well as Parvarrish is doing. Anyway, that’s another topic for another time.  Unfortunately, the show only lasted about two months (60 episodes only)!

I Luv My India was a family comedy show based on an Indian family, The Sethis. The focus of the show was on Indian family values in a light-hearted manner. The show starred Premnath (Arun Bali) and Deep Sethi (Himani Shivpuri). They had been living in London for many years and kept dreaming of the day they will go back home with their family to Punjab, India. They were a family of three generations who lived under one roof. The first generation was very patriotic, the head of the family Premnath (Arun Bali) and his wife Deep Sethi (Himani Shivpuri). The second generation their children Ravinder (Imran Khan) married to Vinny (Dilnaz Irani), Rajinder (Indresh Malik) married to Simran aka Simmi (Anjali Mukhi) and Surinder aka Sam (Rohan Tiwari). The third generation was their grandchildren Ravinder and Vinny’s son Prem (Ayaz Khan). Rajinder and Simmi’s children were Jazzy and Dimple. The children and grandchildren as they were born and raised in London (except for Ravinder who was born in Punjab) they all have adapted to the English ways of doing everything and stay well away from anything and everything desi. They even addressed their grandparents as ‘grand-mom’ and ‘grand-pa’. The show revolves around the family and their ways of living.

The first episode was very grand with all that happens when a Punjabi celebration takes place. Deep Sethi dreams of her entire family living in Punjab. She wants her family to be who they are; that is Punjabi but that doesn’t look like it will ever happen. They try to convince their children to go to India but as they were London born children so they were not willing to leave. Suddenly, circumstances changed and they all had to leave for India.

The initial episodes were beautifully shot. The typical Punjabi things like the bhangra, dhol, food and so on were all present. The viewers especially those abroad would have loved to see the celebration taking place as it would have brought back a reminder of their motherland. To top it all, the patriotic song (Pagri sambhal jatta) played was like the icing on the cake. In the beginning, the first few episodes were great to watch. It showed the love for India within the lead characters which came across very well. The idea of this show was brilliant but it didn’t work long enough.

Why didn’t it last?

The main reason the story wasn’t able to follow through was as a result, the TRPs which had been falling from the beginning and not once did it reach even TRP of 1. The concept of the show was contemporary and very close to real life. Sadly, the ratings did not match up to what the show was or could have been. The show was battling with the likes of Star Plus’ Iss Pyar ko kya naam doon and Colors’ Balika Vadhu which have higher ratings. However, if the show had a different time slot it probably would have gained better ratings. 
Anyway, I loved watching it, including all the nonsense that happened in it. The characters as individuals brought a new vibe to television. This was an attempt to entertain viewers which I’m sure it did. Well I can say that it did entertain me. I myself can relate to this show very much as I was also born and raised in London but have always been very close to my roots, Kashmir. Being born in London or anywhere else doesn’t automatically mean you’re only where you were born or live but it’s a choice people make. This show has visualised how London born children of a family, did not value their true roots of India but when they went there they learned the true meaning of being an Indian. I Luv My India has ended positively by showing the grandparents dream coming true of the family living together happily in India.

On a final note, I wish the cast and crew all the very best for the future and their next project(s) be entertaining and a success.

Sunday’s will never be the same again! Yes we are talking about Satyamev Jayate. It was time for the second Episode and yet another Shock. The audiences were eagerly waiting to know about the second topic and as mention in our previous post ”What to expect from upcoming second episode of Satyamev Jayate?”  This episode was indeed about “Child Sexual Abuse”.

The show started with Aamir Khan talking about Parents. He mentioned that our parents are always worried about their kids; they always ensure that we are safe. There was a moment when Aamir’s parents said “You will understand this when you become a parent” How often do we hear this!! I guess most of our parents might have said the same thing to us at some point in time. In the show they had invited Parents who had kids between 12-13 yrs. And soon there was a disclaimer made by Aamir Khan and stated that if parents feel that this show should not be watched by their kids, they must ensure that they are in a safe place. But soon he mentioned that they will hold a workshop for children towards the end of the episode.

As expected the show did move on to the Statistics about Child Sex Abuse.  Based on Indian Child Sexual Abuse report: 2007, 53% Indian children are victims of some form of Child sex abuse.  And soon the 1st story was based on the same topic, as Cindrella shared her shocking story. The reactions of the audience were just too scary. The audience could not believe what they were hearing this. But Cindrella   did show her fighting spirit but she was still so brave while describing the incident in front of whole world. It takes lot of courage to do that. Soon there were more shocking stats that were yet to come. Listen to this “53% of boys are sexually abused which is more than girls” Yes that is actually SHOCKING.Soon the second guest did share his side of the story. Harish suffered 11 years of Child sex abuse in silence. He was talking about the ugly side and also did mention that all he had to do was say NO. But at times it’s too hard to say your first NO.  Harish’s mother also made an appeal to parents to believe their children if they ever talk about Child sex abuse.

The stories did not end there; there were numerous incidents that were shared. Every story was more ugly than before, but the courage that was displayed by the guests made you feel that it takes a lot of guts to stand and share it with the world.  Dr Rajat Mitra did try to explain the mental state of the perpetrators and also made a very valid point that one should respect the behaviours of a person and not the age.   But as they say “When life gives you a hundred reasons to cry, show life that you have a thousand reasons to smile”  There was also a small ray of hope for the children who are suffering this abuse.1098. Yes this is not a normal number. It’s a Helpline number for kids and as of now they have centres in 200 cities in India. It is a helpline that gets 25 lakh calls every year. So do keep this number in mind and spread the awareness.

As promised at the start of the show Aamir did invite the kids on the show and spoke to them. It was a great joy to watch the kids on the show and talk about their version of the word Safety. The workshop did tell them to ensure that they must try to save themselves and scream when such incidents occur. And when it comes to the 3 body parts they must share it with their parents.  And parents should conduct the workshop with their children every 6 months.

Did we forget something…? Well yes, Sridevi was also on the show. As she was shared a testimony of Harish’s story and she was kind enough to come down to meet Harish personally. The show did end on a positive note and there was also a commitment made that Aamir Khan will send across a letter to the government and request them to pass the Law that is pending in Rajya Sabha.

The show had 3 stories that were shocking but did hit the hearts, and that was evident by the reactions of the audience in the studios. So what our audience can we expect from the next episode of Satyamev Jayate?

As the first episode spoke and discussed about one of the major evil social issues that our country and society is facing, so it is obvious to assume that the upcoming episode will have some or the other social issues as well. The first show and issue was really intriguing and kept the audience hooked with their tears in eyes. So as expected ‘The Perfectionist’ – Amir has already set the bar and the audience will look forward to more from the coming episodes. Well the show had everything you need to make it a success in today’s television scenario where every show (drama or reality) is fighting for TRPs. It has the reality of our life, strong emotional quotient, some really hard hitting facts (which left everyone bewildered) and obviously a pretty star face – Aamir Khan. Undoubtedly Aamir Khan did justice to a strong host and kept the show alive without any dull moments.

The next episodes might portray other really negative issues that our government has not been able to do anything about: “Child Sexual Abuse” or may be “The plight of women’s safety in India with alarmingly raising number of rape and molestation cases”. There is something else that might take the show maker’s attention; “Child Labor and its deadly impact on the upliftment of our country” or “The stark reality behind Indian farmers attempting suicide”.

Whatever may be the next social issue to be addressed or as the social media is upbeat about Amir keeping the secret and excitement for next episode intact; one thing is sure that nobody can be certain of the effective action coming out via this show. It might force us to see the real state of our country and its people but the important thing is that it should be able to bring a change.

As Amir Khan says in one of the promos of the show: “Sirf hungama khada karna mera maksad nahi, meri koshish hai ki ye soorat badalni chahiye; meri seene me nahi to tere seene me sahi, ho kahi bhi aag lekin aag jalni chahiye“. So will we be able bring a change whether in female foeticide or any other issue that will be addressed in upcoming episodes?

The show has got 6.2 TVR, which is Remarkable!

Again, I’m very happy to see so many numbers in Blue. But this time, IPL has ruled again; as you can see above, Max has the highest TRPs. Star Plus has still maintained its top position in GECs and this time have also shown a hike in its GRPs. Zee TV fans be happy; as it has gained its number 2 position after competing with Sony TV for quite some time now. Sony is now on number 3 as per GRPs, followed by colors on number 4.

Kyaa Hua Tera Vaada has picked it up so well. ‘Kaalit potna’ track managed to actually gain ratings. The current track is very interesting and it clearly depicts that audiences love it. Last to last week its rating was 1.7 which increased to 2.2 and now it’s 2.4. It has shown a consecutive hike past 3 weeks. Now, I really hope this consistency is maintained!

Shocker is, now Bade Acche Lagte Hain is not the only top show on Sony TV, it has to share its position with Kya Hua Tera Vaada. Now the big question is; will the magic of Kyunki-Kahani be recreated? Considering both the shows and the time slot 10-11 pm; will that happen? What do you think?

Sudden decline has been noticed in Tarak Mehta Ka Oooltah Chashma on Sab TV. The creative team needs to show something very different and not make it so monotonous every week.

Ek Hazaron Mein Meri Behena Hai, Saathiya and Yeh Rishta have managed to increase. Last week’s decline helped them to come up with newer tracks and a fast pace story which has been witnessed today in terms of ratings. Good Job!
